Baking With Kids
Play It Safe

By following a few safety tips, baking with your kids will be free of worries and full of memories.

Oven Safety
  • It is always best for an adult to operate the oven and microwave.
  • Use oven mitts when handling anything that has been on the stove, in the oven or in the microwave.
  • My mom uses a timer when we are baking so that we don't burn our cookies, muffins or cakes. She says we can always add more time - but we can't take it back.

    Knife Safety
  • Always supervise children when using knives – show them how to use a knife safely and then offer them a table knife or plastic knife to practice with or use.
  • Some Knife Saftey Tips To Teach Children:

  • Keep your fingers away from the blades of sharp knives.
  • Always pick up knives by their handles.
  • Use a cutting board so that knives won't slip.
  • Always cut away from your body with the sharp edge facing away from you.
  • Keeping Clean
  • Roll up your sleeves, tie back your hair if it is long, wash your hands and put on an apron.
  • Always use clean utensils.
  • Clean up the kitchen as you go along.
  • Put ingredients away as you finish with them – it will help you stay focused on what your children are doing instead of a growing mess.
  • My mom fills a sink with warm, soapy water and we put in utensils as we finish with them – except for knives. We clean those separately.

We always wash our hands before baking – and wash in between if we ever touch raw (yuck!) meat, poultry or fish.
