Here are some ideas and activities to make it even more enjoyable.

Decorating Practice Pages

Print off the pages below and have your young bakers think up decorating ideas while they’re waiting for their treats to be ready. Using crayons and markers, they can try all sorts of patterns and designs.

When I decorate, I like to do stars, moons and other space shapes. I also like doing stripes in different colours. Elizabeth is always doing hearts for a boy named Rodney. Yuck!

 

  • Try using decorations other than candy, such as cereal, pretzels, chips, etc.
  • For special birthday cupcakes, ice each one, then place a hard candy ring or gummy ring on top and stand a candle in the centre of each one.
    • Baking Activity Stations

    PRINT OUT SIGNS FOR YOUR BAKING ACTIVITY STATIONS:


    Setting up your kitchen with activity stations is an easy and interactive way to teach your kids about baking. Below, you can even print out signs for each of the stations.

    1. Once you’ve chosen your recipe together, create a PREPARATION station to gather and prepare many of your baking tools and ingredients.
    2. Create a MIXING station where your children can combine all the ingredients for the recipe. Make sure there’s room for mixing bowls, baking sheets and whatever else you may need.
    3. Whether you’re using the oven, microwave or stovetop, you can set up a BAKING station for this step. It’s always best for an adult to operate these appliances and handle any hot pans, dishes or baking sheets.
    4. Set up a DECORATING station where your children can top off their creations however they choose. For easy clean up, line the counter with waxed paper. Set up some bowls with different toppings and let their imaginations run wild. While they’re waiting for their treat to bake, they can even draw out some designs on Decorating Pages above.
    Baking Project Calendar

    Get your children excited about baking with a calendar that plans upcoming baking projects.

    1. Print a calendar and put it up in the kitchen or your children’s rooms.
    2. Print off and cut out the pictures for the kid-friendly recipes on this site (below). Create stickers by printing them on label paper, or just print them on regular paper and attach a little tape. Then stick the pictures on the date of your baking project.
    3. You can even plan trips to the store by writing in all the ingredients they’ll need for their masterpiece.
    4. Once you’ve finished your projects, your children can keep the calendar so they’ll always remember how much fun they had baking.
    Make a Caterpillar!

    With some cupcakes, a little icing and a few decorations, you can create a caterpillar that’s actually fun to eat.

    1. Make your cupcakes into a caterpillar by icing the bottom and sides of each one, then line them up in a wiggly row with the un-iced sides down.
    2. Decorate the front cupcake with shoestring licorice antennae, candy eyes and nose, and an icing mouth.
    3. To all the other cupcakes, add shoestring licorice feet and other decorations.
    4. For a fuzzy caterpillar, sprinkle on some coconut.
    Create a Cookie Cutter Shape

    Kids don’t need store-bought cookie cutters to make yummy masterpieces. All they need is waxed paper, scissors, lightweight cardboard, adult supervision and a good imagination. Simply help your little baker follow the directions below, and voila! An edible work of art!

    When we make cookie cutters with mommy, we make all sorts of different patterns. We do little people, animals, shapes and even flowers.

     

    1. Children can pick one of the patterns below or draw their own.
    2. Place waxed paper over the pattern outline and trace the design with a pencil.
    3. Place the waxed paper on top of a piece of lightweight cardboard and cut along the pencil outline with scissors.
    4. Gently place the cardboard pattern on top of the dough, and cut out with a paring knife.
    5. Roll the leftover dough scraps together and repeat until all the dough is used.
    6. Decorate the finished cookies with coloured icing and candies

    I love racing my cars through mountains of flour. Mom puts the flour onto newspaper or in the backyard, and I can crash my cars into it or fill up my dump trucks with it. Mom says she likes that she can clean it up with the vacuum after. Elizabeth pretends her dolls are at the beach (yuck!)
