These yummy goodies are the cream of the crop. Fill them with fresh whipping cream and decorate with a drizzle of chocolate flavoured syrup.

Ingredients

Puffs

½ cup 125 mL Crisco® All Vegetable Shortening
1 cup 250 mL water
1 cup 250 mL Robin Hood® Original All Purpose Flour
¼ tsp 1 mL salt
4 eggs

Filling

1 cup 250 mL whipping cream
3 tbsp 45 mL granulated sugar
Smucker’s® Sundae Syrup™ Chocolate Flavoured Syrup, for garnish

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425ºF (220ºC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Tip

Eggs are an essential part of this recipe, and it’s important to add them one by one. Have your kids practice cracking open one egg at a time into a small bowl or a ramekin so that they can pour the egg into the mixture while you are whisking.

  3. Puffs: Bring, in a medium sized saucepan, shortening and water to a boil. Add flour and salt and stir well until mixture is smooth. It will look pasty at first, but will then come together to form a ball. Remove from heat and let cool, 5 to 10 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Drop, on prepared baking sheet, dough by tablespoonfuls (15 mL).
  5. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350ºF (180ºC) and bake 20 to 25 minutes longer.
  6. Tip

Feeling adventurous? Get your kids to help you place the pastry in small lines on your baking tray to create your very own chocolate éclairs.

  7. Remove from oven and prick puffs in several places with toothpick. Let cool to room temperature. Cut each puff in half with serrated knife.
  8. Tip

Have lots of toothpicks on hand and let your kids make tiny holes all over each pastry puff. Do they know what this does to the pastry? It lets the steam escape so that the puffs don’t collapse.

  9. Filling: Beat whipping cream and sugar on high speed of electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
  10. Place 1 tbsp (15 mL) of cream on each bottom puff, cover with top and drizzle with syrup.

Tips

  • Smucker’s Sundae Syrup Chocolate Flavoured Syrup sauce isn’t the only flavour that goes well with these cream puffs, try caramel or even strawberry flavoured syrup too!
  • Whipping cream for a special occasion dessert? Add the sugar once the whipping cream is frothy but not yet firm.
