Chocolate Oatmeal Funny Face Cookies

Finally play with your food!  Bring these tasty (and silly) cookies to life by decking them out with the funniest, wackiest, and craziest faces you can think of! After all, what goes better with a good laugh than a great cookie?

Ingredients

Cookie

1 ½ cups 375 mL Robin Hood® Original All Purpose Flour
2 tsp 10 mL baking soda
1 tsp 5 mL salt
2 ⅓ cups 575 mL Robin Hood Oats
1 cup 250 mL Crisco® All Vegetable shortening
1 ½ cups 375 mL packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp 5 mL vanilla extract
1 ½ cups 375 mL semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup 250 mL chopped nuts

Decorations

1/2 cup 125 mL semi-sweet chocolate, melted and cooled
2 tbsp 30 mL Crisco All Vegetable Shortening
2 ¼ cups 550 mL icing sugar
⅓ cup 75 mL milk
Candies: nuts, gum drops, licorice, jelly beans, etc.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Tip

    Have your kids read through the recipe with you and prep all ingredients together before getting started. Being organized will help make your baking even more fun.

  3. Cookie: Combine flour, baking soda, salt and oats in a large bowl. Stir well to blend. Cream shortening, brown sugar, eggs and vanilla together in a separate mixing bowl. Add flour mixture; mix well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop dough by heaping tablespoonfuls (15 mL) onto prepared baking sheets. Flatten with hands to 3 ½" (8 cm) circles.

    Kid Challenge! Do your kids know the difference between mixing, stirring, creaming and combining?

    Tip

    Have a few pre-boiled eggs on hand and ask your kids which ones are raw and which are cooked. Show them that you can find out by simply spinning the egg. If it spins well, it's hardboiled. If it wobbles and spins slowly, it's raw.

    Tip

    Teach your kids about substitutions by swapping chopped nuts for coconut or pumpkin seeds.

  5. Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden. Cool on pans 5 minutes, then transfer to racks and cool completely.
  6. Tip

    While the cookies are baking, have your kids sketch different faces to decide which one they would like to make for decoration.

  7. Decorations: Beat first 4 ingredients together to make a smooth, spreadable chocolate icing. Spread on cookies and use your favourite colourful candies to make faces or any other decorations you like.

    What other faces can your kids come up with? Have them try making animal faces, monster faces, or maybe even the faces of your family!
